Lonoke, Washington Counties Add Historical Markers

Lonoke and Washington Counties are slated to add Civil War commemorative historical markers, according to Tom Dupree with the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.

In Washington County, a marker about local Confederate camps before the Battle of Pea Ridge will be placed in downtown Elm Springs. The Historical Society of Elm Springs sponsored this marker.

Military activities in the Austin area are commemorated with a marker at Old Austin United Methodist Church in Lonoke County; it is sponsored by the Grand Prairie Civil War Round Table.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is finishing its 2015 work of placing at least one commemorative marker in each of Arkansas’ 75 counties with 141 markers being put into place across the state.
